About ten months ago, as part of its FP6 support program, the EU funded a
multi-country project called PLANETS (Preservation and Long-term access
through Networked Services). For PLANETS
The home website is at http://www.planets-project.eu. October 2006 overview
presentation charts are available at
www.planets-project.eu/docs/presentations/Planets_iPres_2006_10_final.ppt.
A November project partners' meeting is reported at
www.digitalpreservationeurope.eu/events/fp6-2006/dpe_caspar_planets_23nov06_
mtg.pdf.
A fast way of achieving a good overall perspective of the state of the art
is to look at PLANETS on-line materials together with [U.S.] NDIIPP National
Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP)
publications. For that, see http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/index.html.
My personal opinion is that the technical part of the NDIIPP work is sadly
weak. I have recently published a critique. For that, see
www.dlib.org/dlib/january07/gladney/01gladney.html.
