I ran an experiment to count the number of different file suffix
extensions on my Windows XP PC,
to determine how much file format documentation would be required to
'understand' my data.

Summary:  1542 different suffixes, and 11512 files with no suffixes in
237,000 files ( 141 Gigabytes).
