Wow! $525,000. for that?
Would any CHM associates want to partner with me to bid for that, perhaps
using CHM as the pilot site with or without some local university library
(Stanford?). (I left a telephone message for Mike Keller.)
To see why I think we might be very well positioned to win support, see a
draft paper that I submitted to The American Archivist in early December.

FYI, I did contact the Blue Ribbon TF to make a suggestion of a
social/collegial nature that is vaguely related to the technical,
implementation, and pilot work that I have in mind. That communication was
well received.
Cheerio, Henry
P.S. One curiosity in the RFP--the full proposal date (3/8/08) is earlier
than the preliminary proposal date (10/6/08). I called the NSF, and the
distinction (not made on the Web page) is that there are two phases of the
programme.

The Blue Ribbon Task Force on Sustainable Digital Preservation is focusing
on solving the expensive and time-consuming problem of preserving digital
data. The new group, backed by a two-year, $525,000 grant from the National
Science Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will work to develop
requirements for an economically-sustainable model for digital preservation.
The task force, which is headed by economist Brian Lavoie, a research
scientist at the OCLC Online Computer Library Center, and San Diego
Supercomputer Center director Francine Berman, is expected to issue two
reports, one at the end of this year and one in 2009. Berman says she is
particularly concerned over the lack of attention being paid to preserving
data from federally-funded research. The task force is collaborating with
the Library of Congress, Britain's Joint Information Systems Committee, the
Council on Library and Information Resources, and the National Archives and
Records Administration."
