This seems like a great opportunity for tie-ins with the activities of the Museum in general and the Software Collection Committee in particular. For example, we could propose to the authors of the special issue that they try to track down software, manuals, etc., for the systems they describe and post these materials at the SCC's web site. I've suggested to Mike Cochran that he submit a short item describing the Cyber1.org activity (making a public PLATO community available via the Internet). Perhaps there are other groups we could work with to help resurrect some of these systems, along the lines that Mike suggested at the last SCC meeting. In particular, we are interested in papers on bulletin boards, dial-up servers, and communications packages on timeshare systems; store and forward networks, pre-OSI communications protocols, Bitnet, Csnet, Telenet, Prodigy, Fidonet, Compuserve and other networks; early use of Listserv and similar protocols; and any technology that provides a service that has been replaced by software running on the Internet. We are interested in articles that deal with all aspects of the history of computer communication including technology, business, social, economical, and educational. Interested authors should contact the Editor in Chief of Annals, David Alan Grier, at <a href="mailto:grier@gwu.edu" _base_target="_top">grier@gwu.edu</a>. Authors should send a one paragraph abstract of their proposed paper by 1 September 2005. Individuals may also propose a slate of two or three papers by different authors. Each table and figure is counted as 200 words (to account for white space needed). Any article that exceeds this word count may be rejected automatically without going through the review process.
