Digression but---You don't even need device or format obsolescence to lose important documents; just lack of planning. About 18 months ago I heard a story on NPR about how documents concerning the origins of the Iraq war (II) were being lost because, for some time, the US National Archives refused to accept material in .doc format (requiring .pdf or ?), and people were starting to discard the machines on which the documents were stored.

Surely there are some technical papers about such a deep and important project, rather than just a news article?
