Henry,
Let me fill in a couple of details the article missed:
1. The largest collection of game software in the world is at
Stanford (over 25K titles). I'm familiar with Warren Spector's
efforts at UT Austin, and we are working with them.
2. There will be a funded national (U.S.) game preservation project
starting 1 Jan. 2008. I'll send along details as soon as the
official announcement is made -- we have to wait for the official news release.
3. However, there has been enough information in the press about
project (2) that the writer for the Guardian should have been able to
sniff it out.
4. The Digital Game Canon project will feed into the effort, and we
hope to continue that program next year at
GDC. http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/
5. Census vs. Dreamcast? It's not a zero-sum game ...
