This seems like a fitting venue.

Hello to you all,
Please see the message below from one of the organisers of the SC07
Conference. It seems that my idea for a "Birds of a Feather" session to
highlight 50 years of Fortran will be replaced by a session in the
official programme. I am very pleased to see that taking place, I only
wish it had happened before I contacted a number of people to contribute
to the possible BoF session.
I don't recognise the names of any of the people mentioned in Harvey
Wasserman's message and I have reservations about putting myself forward
to speak about the "Future of Fortran" as well as wishing that there was
a talk celebrating the work of John Backus as part of the programme.
I have BCCed a number of my contacts in the western hemisphere onto this
message and I would welcome comments from both sides of the Atlantic
before I reply to Harvey.
Best wishes,
Peter Crouch

Dear Peter,
Nancy Wilkins-Diehr forwarded to me your inquiries regarding the
Fortran Golden Jubilee year
and I'm happy to say that we are planning a Fortran at 50 session at SC07.
We've scheduled it for Thursday, November 15, from 10:30 AM to 12:00
PM. It will
take the form of a panel session and we'd like to ask you to
speak as part of it. It will NOT be a "Birds of a Feather" session.
Although the complete lineup is still rather tentative we are
envisioning the following.
Fran Allen, IBM Fellow Emerita, has offered to be Master of
Ceremonies, about which,
we're very happy.
Tentative Outline:
1. Introducing Fran Allen (José Moreira, SC07 Panels Chair) 5 minutes
2. Fran Allen talk 15 minutes
3. Compiler viewpoint 15 minutes
4. Application / user viewpoint 15 minutes
5. Architectural impacts of Fortran: 15 minutes
6. Future of Fortran 15 minutes
7. Questions from audience: 10 minutes
Total: 90 minutes.
José Moreira of IBM is lining up the speakers and has several in mind
for items 3-5 so we're
wondering if you would be willing to do the "Future of Fortran" segment.
SC07 will be held November 10-16, 2007, in Reno, NV.
Will you please let me know how all of this sounds to you?
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Harvey Wasserman
